One of Aurelie's favorite photos, this picture was taken out west on our day trip to Piha Beach. The sand is naturally black from the volcanic ash. Apparently, in the summer, the sand becomes unbearably hot to walk upon. But seeing as it's winter, we found it to be quite refreshing for our bare feet.
Speaking of winter, it has been very hard for Aurelie and I to realise that we are in the winter season here in Auckland. Most days are quite pleasant, never going below 10C. And even if it's a little rainy, it's never that cold (and nowhere near Canadian cold!). But this doesn't mean the summers are hot ... apparently the average temperature in the summer is around 25C. NZ is a nice place to live!

Ahhh ... I love this picture ! this is my definition of Paradise put in a picture. Kiwis are quite spoiled and think it is cold when it goes below 10C ! they are actually wearing warm, long wooled coats when I am too hot with my cotton rain coat ... crazy Kiwis ;)

I understand the plight of the kiwis....temperature below 10C is toooooooo cold for me ;-))) I'm sure I'll become a frozen block if I ever have to experience a Canadian winter ;-)

Where have I to sign to live here ? I heard this morning that in the far North of Canada an Inuit village has registred yesterday 37°C where the average temperature in this season should be around 10 or 15°, I don't remember. Maybe the journalist made a mistake ant the temperature was 37°F, that is to say around 2°C...
Whatever, weather is crazy like a ***** cow !

Very nice picture Aaron. Here in Oakville the temp is 34 C today and with the humidity it is 40C. It has been vey hot and we have had this weather for about 2 weeks now. Remember last Christmas up at Auntie Jill's it was 34 C below zero and freezing. What crazy weather here. Sounds like NZ is the place to live. Have a nice day.

Hello everyone I'm Aaron and Aurelie's flatmate in Auckland. Aaron your photos are awesome! I used to run an Eco-tourism company that took tours in this area every day. Only 40mins from our house in the city! The dark sand as Aaron said is from a Volcano(still live) and is titanomagnetitie & Ilmenite. Iron/Tinanium. There is about 40% Ore concentration in places and is mined, down the coast, for the production of Steel. Yes some peoples feet have been blisted after trying to get to the sea for a swim in summer! However NZs East Coast only 40min in the other direction has pure white silica sands and its used to make glass!
