I'm posting another picture of Jordi in recognition of his heroism this past Sunday.
The story starts with Jordi and his brother, Merlo, out surfing at Piha beach. They had been out on the water for only 15 minutes when Jordi noticed 2 boogie boarders in trouble, being swept out to see by the rip. One boarder managed to get himself to safety while the other was drifting further away. Jordi reached the lost boarder just in time, as his head was starting to slip under the water. He lifted the guy up onto his board and then held up his hand as the signal for rescue. Merlo, meanwhile, had paddled into shore and had run the entire length of Piha beach to the lifeguard station. Unfortunately, Piha lifeguards don't come on duty for the season until next weekend, but he was able to get in contact with the police.
Already way out to sea, Jordi was forced to paddle even farther out to get around the rip tide. After 25 minutes of paddling, Jordi finally got himself and the boarder back to shore. With help from Merlo, they had carried him up onto the beach, the young man was in a complete state of exhaustion, not breathing properly and coughing up water. By this time, lifegaurds had arrived on the scene, bringing with them an ambulance and Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
The young man was rushed to hospital and made a full recovery a few hours later. At the bottom of an article in the NZ Herald they described the rescue but with no mention of Jordi's name or efforts. This is not the first time Jordi has put his own life in danger to save other people's lives. I figured a picture on Aminus3 is the least I can do to give Jordi some of the recognition he deserves.

Just the kind of story I like... a hero, suspense, danger, and a happy ending. The only thing missing is romance! Much admiration, Jordi.
Aaron and Aurélie, I was thinking of you this morning because I had a kiwi for breakfast. Are the kiwis bigger and better in New Zealand?

Well done Jordi! The world surely needs more heroes like you... Take care!

Good idea Aaron to post a photo of an anonymous hero.
I'm impressive Jordy of what you do.

Wow - Way to go Jordi! Aaron - this is an excellent portrait worthy of a newspaper article which you've written nicely to accompany :)

Great story and picture. Thats was a very brave thing to do, man!
Damm to NZ Herald.

By all means send this directly to the NZ Herald as a letter to the editor. You might begin by saying, "The first thing beginning journalists learn is the 5 w's. Always get them, and always get them right: WHO, what, when, where, why. You got the story right, but your forgot to tell us WHO!"
By the way, great photo, too. How did you happen to get all this?

Great picture, great story.
Way to educate the populace of the real life hero. And Jordi - you should be proud! With CNN blaring bad news all day, it's great to hear of stories like yours. Well done! You certainly deserve all the recognition you can get.

Thanks for the comments. Jordi's away for the weekend but I'm sure he'll appreciate what you've all written.
Jane - depends on whether you're talking about the fruit or the men. ;)
Ben - The photo was taken a few weeks ago. Sending an email to the Herald is not a bad idea. :)

We all recognize your heroism, Jordi. I'm sure the young man you rescued will always been thankful to you for saving his life. These stories often go unmissed by the public so, thanks, Aaron for posting this on Aminus3.

I'm so embarrassed right now! ahhh! However, thank you Aaron that was very nice of you to do that!

Hi Aaron, I'm Jordi's mum. That was very good of you to acknowledge Jordi and Merlin's bravery and efforts, especially as the reporter got it so wrong! Seeing your nice stories and photos warms my heart. It was a very emotional moment when the father of the young man who almost drowned called Jordi to thank him. His wife had to take over the phone... None of us knew until Jordi actually had a beer with them a few days later that the near victim of the wild west coast had a three year old daughter at home in the UK! All power to the life-savers.....! Brenda.

Good for you Jordi & Merlin. Your actions go to show the type of young man you have both grown into and that is something I think a lot of people in this world in this day and age could learn a lot from. It take a special person to put themselves in harms way to assist others and even more so when it is someone they do not know.
Keep up the great work and let hope your ethics rub off on other.
