The Maoris have beautiful carvings known as whakairo. In the background is a scene of a sailing ship etched into the glass.

The tattoo as you say is called Ta moko,the statue is of the Great Maniapoto Chief, Tu Whakahekeao, he was a Great war hero whom lead his native war troops into battle against enemy tribes, a Great Successer, the Ta moko describes his Rank and status in the community, also identifying to all other tribes who he was n what position he held. Maori people wore their identity, status, on there faces, by way of fine chizeled lines created by striking the surface using a small wooden mallet against another stik implement which had a sharpend piece of Albatros bone thatched to the end of it.
