Red Crater, Tongariro Crossing

Posted by Aaron Schmidt (Auckland, New Zealand) on 19 January 2006 in Landscape & Rural.

The jagged scar of Red Crater can be seen in both pictures, a massive wound in the side of this beautiful volcano. Red Crater is an active volcano just next to Mt. Tongariro and makes up part of the Tongariro Crossing, an 8 hour hike through Tongariro National Park in the North Island of New Zealand.
