Continuing my picture of Mount Ngauruhoe from yesterday, this time showing a closeup of the fabled Mount Doom and its beautiful volcanic slope. It's hard to get an idea of scale but this volcano is massive, rising 1,978 metres (6,489 feet) into the sky. Mount Ngauruhoe is active and erupted in 1975.

I heard some scratchings and bitings when we rounded the North Face but when I tried to get close, the creature disappeared ... it was probably just the Snow Demon of Mount Ruapehu but one can never be sure.
