City of Napier, New Zealand

Posted by Aaron Schmidt (Auckland, New Zealand) on 8 February 2006 in Cityscape & Urban.

A view down one of the main streets of Napier as the sun sets in the west. In 1931, a huge 7.9 magnitude earthquake flattened Napier. So from 1932 to 1934 the city was rebuilt, largely in the art deco style with a few massive apes thrown in. References to these years of rebirth can be seen all over the city.
