At Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland there was a beautiful Maori presentation demonstrating how one tribe would receive another tribe. The stranger tribe would first make an offering of peace that would be (hopefully) accepted by the native tribe, else war and blood would be spilt upon the sacred land.

Strange custom. Excellent capture of the mood and expressions. Where is the other tribe? Simlar kind of custom exists between 2 tribal villages in Hyderabad. Both village people fight for a god's statue and who ever wins that village can worship the god for that year. Lot of people die during the process

When gods are implyed, that often leads to casualties. That's why I try to keep them far enough from my life and do not try to bother them, even if I do not trust in them. People who trust often take offense for them (their gods although that's not their business !). Gods can take their own defense ! They are strong or old enough to have it by themselve, if I believe what the priest say ! ;)

Steve - The branch is given as an offering of peace, the fighting stick and knife are used to beat upon the enemy should they not accept the offering of peace.
