@Michael Skorulski: Indeed it is volcanic. The beach of Muriwai is covered in small volcanic rocks like these ... the area is known as the pillow lava formations.

@shahab: It's the pattern in the sand that the water has created as the tide flows in and out.

Not something you would expect to see occur naturally. Nature is forever surprising us. On 1st glance, I thought it was the artistic efforts of someone painting eyelashes in the sand to turn the rock into an eye. It is wonderful that you were able to capture Nature's surprise before the tide started its next "master" work.
