The RSX Windsurfing World Championships are being held in Takapuna, New Zealand this year. Since I work in Takapuna, it's been very convenient to run down to the beach at lunch and grab some pics.
Here's a shot of the gold fleet going out for their first race of the day. The start of the race begins way out on the water where there's more wind so this part isn't too exciting but it's a good opportunity to get a photo with a lot of windsurfers in the frame. In the background, Rangitoto.

these guys look pretty docile from this vantage point - I guess the action is out on the water! (and now reading your description I see you mention this :)
looks like a good mix of nationalities in the participants. Cool that you are able to go watch this event.
