Here are the Emerald Lakes at the base of the Red Crater volcano. Aurelie and I passed by these beautiful lakes on our 8-hour hike through the Tongariro Crossing.
Beautiful, but the water must be cold. Or acid. Because nobody is swimming in !

Are people able to swim in these waters? Very remote location obviously, i just wonder of the safety of the water itself. Is it heavily laden with chemicals or safe as rain at Hooper Street?

The picture is taken from the top of Red Crater. The colour as you can see is just amazing. I also wondered if you could swim in those waters ... so I put my hand in it and did not get acid burnt (good news!) but it is definitely full of minerals like sufer.
Sorry for the lack of description ... I've updated the text above. Also see Aurelie's description.

Yep, full of sulfer, also there are lakes around which only have sulfer in parts of them, which make the lakes dotted with green in clear blue tones. A beautiful area, this is around Rotorua, right?
I flew over here, I'm pretty sure, if this is in the middle of the North Island, in a water-plane 3 years ago. Absolutely gorgeous terrain.
