Exotic pigeon? standing on dead tree

Not really sure what species or variety of bird this is. Looks a lot like a pigeon to me.

Update: Thanks to Illuci who has noticed that this bird closely resembles the California Quail. Apparently this species was introduced into NZ in 1865 and has adapted well to the climate and landscape.
